Merry Christmas! The Open effect

Merry Christmas!

We hope you have an amazing time with family and friends. We hope those of you that are deployed or have family members that are deployed feel the love from here to where you are. We hope for peace that surpasses all understanding and a joy that is overwhelming.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Trial Built CrossFit.

The CrossFit Open - The Open effect

There are so many stories of conquering movements from the Open every year.

We have heard and seen stories throughout the history of the Open of people getting their first pull-ups, or setting PR's in their clean and jerk, or perhaps getting their first pistol squat.

It is a magical time, and really can't be beaten. But why is it so special? Why do PR's happen during the open. One word, competition.

We live in a world right now where people might tell you competing is selfish, or that you shouldn't push that hard. It is silly to me to think this way. In all actuality competition is where big things happen.

Competing against yourself is a way to compete. Seeing how you stack up against all of your fellow nurses or teachers in the world is a way to compete.  Leaderboarding with all of your friends across the world is competition. It is so much fun finding a way to engage on that level.

Lets think about some of the big PR's that have happened in competition across different endeavors.

Edison, Tesla and Westinghouse on the race to bring power to homes and businesses in America made two systems existing technologies better, Alternating Current and Direct Current. This competition allowed for light bulbs to be created by Edison as well as the bringing of power from a hydroelectric dam in Niagara Falls all the way to buffalo New York 26 miles away, a huge feat in 1896.

Or how about the race to making beautiful electric cars by Tesla and Fisker? Elon had employed Fisker to make his then only a dream model S more beautiful, Fisker instead decided to make his own electric car that honestly stole the show. I think that because of that competition, while petty, Tesla started making much better looking cars (minus the Cybertruck. I think it is hideous but thats what makes it cool).

One more, the Transcontinental Railway spanning across our country was a competition between two different companies that allowed for travel to be sped up by months and reducing the potential for travelers to contract deadly sicknesses. Two competing companies that actually made money and were given land for every mile of track they laid down. Something that we all benefitted from.

Competition is not bad. Quite the opposite. It is a breeding ground for change, be it physical or in the ether. It brings about friendly rivalries and sometimes friendships. It can create riffs but honestly that is worth the risk.

You don’t have to be a competitor or competitive to actually compete. You can find a way to compete in a realistic manner. This is where logging scores comes in handy. Say we have an event like Fran pop up in the Open. Well we did Fran a few weeks ago. So you can see if you made progress over that time. So jump in. Compete. Have fun. This is the CrossFit Open.
