Leveling up. Chalk. Sugar.
Leveling up
This weekend I was late on getting programming up and having this newsletter in your hands. For that I apologize. However, for the reason I had it late to you, I do not.
This weekend Warda and I were able to be a part of the CF L2. It was a great experience. The big takeaway. Be relentless in our pursuit of improvement. That relentless pursuit is such a beautiful thing. If I am ever just satisfied with my movement patterns I leave performance, weight or skill on the floor. I don't want that.
What I do want is to always pursue improvement in all ways. In my movement patterns, coaching, programming, family life, there is always room for better patterns and attention to detail.
What ways are you looking to improve? In what ways do you realize that you have started coasting? This introspection helps us to acknowledge when we are just getting by and when we could lean in and squeeze out a bit more performance.
Back to the CF L2 course. On top of having a great breakdown of how each of us in the class could improve, we had the opportunity to hear from some industry leaders (and former competitors). What a pleasure to have Katie Hogan, Wes Piatt and Austin Begiebing as our instructors. Each of them have competed at the CrossFit Games and each own their own affiliate. The level of experience and expertise was inspiring to say the least. I can see the future of our gym through the encouraging words they shared and it's exciting.
Let's level up together. Let's be the gym that is excited for growth, and challenging where we are today. I think you have it in you to build a great future. I am willing to push myself into better positions and dig deeper in my efficacy of movement and I hope you are too.
Chalk, Barbells, Dumbbells, Sugar, Scheduling class
Silly as it may sound, please keep chalk in the chalk bucket. Having a chunk of chalk on the ground often results in someone stepping on it. Please keep all chalk in the buckets.
Barbells have been so much cleaner. Thank you all for wiping them down each time you use them. It is appreciated by the next person that grabs one. Also thank you so much for not leaving them on the squat racks.
Dumbbells and kettlebells are a tough one to keep organized. If everyone keeps them in order from left to right and top to bottom, we can keep them in some semblance of order. If you see that someone else has put one back incorrectly I would be grateful if you moved into the right spot.
So let's talk about sugar… Some of us in the gym have removed refined sugar from their diets and have a tough time saying no if it's presented to them. As much as I love celebrating with people, I think it is a good idea to not have sweets and processed sugars in the gym. Lets keep this a place where people aren't tempted. Thanks for celebrating and thanks for having each other's backs. Maybe a bouquet of beef jerky might be better. Haha.
Scheduling class. Some of you have gotten much better at scheduling class. Thanks for that. Can you please make sure to always check in… whether you are in class or open gym. Please sign up for something if you enter the building. This helps us to support a good community environment. Also for those that have not yet updated their photo on their sugarwod and zenplanner please do so. This helps other athletes that might not remember your name as well to put a face to a name. We are getting more members so let's set the culture. Finally classes will be limited to 15 people for the foreseeable future. This means it's even more important to sign up for class ahead of time. We want our coaches to focus well on your movement in order to help you out and class sizes capped at 15 really help with that.
Thanks everyone. We are all constantly making this space better.
Keep building,
James and Bre Cooper
